R-Type for the X68000 is a close port of the coin op, but to be fair I was expecting a little more. We are not in the territory of arcade-perfect conversions such as Ghouls'n'Ghosts or Strider here. The graphics for instance seem to have a little less color and the resolution seems to be lower as well. The fm music is also initially hard on the ears and doesn't sound as good as the arcade. For the rest, R-Type is a very faithful port and nothing is missing. All enemies are there, the scrolling is smooth enough and even the parallax scrolling which is often sacrificed in other home versions (like the competent Sega Mark III vers.) has been kept intact here. Comparing it to the other home ports, I would say that the PSOne version comes out on top as being arcade perfect. This makes this X68000 version the second best home port, light years ahead of the glorified Amiga version. As far as home releases (and not direct ports), the Pc Engine CD also deserves to be mentioned as being really good. The extra cut-scenes and new music make it feel more like a remake though. Bottom line: R-Type for X68000 is one of the better versions for home use although if you are expecting a pixel-perfect port, you probably should get the PSOne version. http://www.illusionware.it
